Shot on 5th Avenue, NYC. The warmth of the two people’s skin tones against the cool green of the background pulls them into the foreground, emphasising the relationship between them both and the person that the man is looking at off-camera. The fact that he is looking at Bill who was standing behind me to my left reveals an extra dimension to the composition as it forces us to consider what lies outside of the frame, and furthermore creates a greater sense of intimacy, and intrigue between image and viewer. What Garry Winogrand often referred to as the element of contention.
