Oh. The woman. I have an old photograph of my great-grandmother and great-grandfather from the turn of the century (1900) sitting at their dining room table. My grandfather sits solemnly staring into the camera, his hands holding his knife and fork, poised to cut his meat. My grandmother, like this woman, sits to his right with eyes downcast and daydreamy as though she is thinking, “How did I get here?” It makes me sad every time I look at it.

I did notice the sadness in this woman’s eyes. Maybe it was symptomatic of the times.
