The Art in Street Photography

In addition to painting versions of my and my wife’s photos, I’ve begun a series wherein I do an interpretation of photographs taken by renowned street photographers. I don’t usually have a predetermined approach to them. I really just start sketching (or painting without a formal sketch) and seeing where they take me.

The results are probably mixed, but it’s an exercise I like. Here are my latest.

“NYC Taxis, circa 1950s,” oil on canvas, 12 x 16 inches, 2024 [Ernst Haas]

“Woman in a Green Coat, NYC, 1967.” Oil on canvas panel, 11 x 14 inches, 2024. [Garry Winogrand]

“Petrol Station, Syria, 1995,” oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches, 2024 [Harry Gruyaert]

“Herzog’s Vancouver,” oil on canvas, 16 x 20 inches, 2024 [Fred Herzog]

And one of my wife’s street shots:

“A Stop in Dublin,” oil on canvas, 18 x 24 inches, 2024. [Maria Jones-Phillips]

That’s all for now. We’ll see how this series progresses with time and practice.
